Alejandro Baillères, inaugurated ITAM’s EPIC Space

On the afternoon of November 14, at the Rio Hondo’s campus, the ITAM’s new EPIC Space, was inaugurated. Alejandro Baillères, participated for the first time in a institutional ceremony as president of ITAM’s Executive Board . During the opening ceremony of this new space, we counted with the presence of students, faculty and prominent members of ITAM’s community.

For Don Alberto, my beloved father, ITAM was his greatest pride and his most precious responsibility. For me, the development and prosperity of this Institute is my greatest desire and my highest priority. – Alejandro Baillères Gual, president of ITAM’s Executive Board.

The inauguration ceremony began with a speech delivered by Daniela Ruiz Massieu, Director of the EPIC Lab. During her speech, Ruiz Massieu explained how the EPIC project started and how the name “EPIC” not only stands for “Emprender, Progresar, Innovar y Crear” in spanish, but also its name derives from the certainty that students would be able to accomplish epic feats with their ideas and projects.

Epic Lab’s goal is to become the best Entrepreneurship Center in Latin America. Currently, Epic Lab has a network of mentors, consisting of 140 alumni who support ITAM entrepreneurs. The director of EPIC Lab, also highlighted the collaborations that ITAM maintains with the Martin Trust Entrepreneurship Center at MIT, and with the Faculty of Chemistry at UNAM. Through these collaborations it has become clear that the most successful entrepreneurs are individuals who have gone through a formal and rigorous educational process.

Next, Jayat González Palomeras, student of Actuarial Science and Applied Mathematics, participated. Jayat is co-creator of Propel Foods, a Mexican foodtech company powered by artificial intelligence that creates hybrid proteins and plant-based foods. This company won the Hultz Prize, one of the most important university awards in the world.

“I fell in love with the art of storytelling to explain an idea and getting that idea to become a project, a startup” – Jayat González Palomeras.

Entrepreneurship is something you learn, the EPIC space is designed for students like Jayat, who not only have an impact on society, but also have an impact on entrepreneurs. “Entrepreneurship is something you learn!” stated Daniela Ruiz Massieu during her speech. This new alternative, gives the ITAM community a new way to develop professionally and personally.
